Turkey Vulture Beauty

As we breach the big dirt hill

something dark encapsulates the sky

a shadow covers me, and

as Harrison is startled back.. I see its’…

6 foot winspan fly over him

Not sure if he

or the beast was more surprised by each others’ presence

We were all searching for lost treasures in Cape Cod.

Felt like a quarrel, a stand-off

a story of an attack festers

in our memory of this Turkey Vulture.

A decade later, I climbed up a big hill

walking along the edge of the sky,

darkness fills my peripheral vision.

That familiar daunting creature

creeping up on me

reflecting its’ shadow onto the ground we share.

I look out into the sky next to me

and there those ugly monsters are.

This time,

no one is startled.

Swooping in the wind,

their long arms glide

utilizing the fuel Mother Nature gives them.

The same breeze that blows my hair.

Here I am,

in their world,

trying to find treasures in the same terrain once again

But this time, they don’t seem so bad.

Not evil. but graceful.

When I entered their world,

they became just as beautiful as butterflies.
